1099 vs W-2 Independent Adjuster — What’s the Difference?

Both roles work claims for carriers and IA firms, but how you’re paid, taxed, trained, and supported is very different. Victory Insured focuses on placing our mentees in W-2 independent adjuster roles so you can earn consistently and ramp faster.

Contractor

1099 Independent Adjuster

  • Pay Model: Typically per claim (fee schedule) or day rate; income can be volatile.

  • Taxes: No withholdings. You handle quarterly taxes, self-employment tax, and deductions.

  • Expenses: Responsible for your gear, software, mileage, travel, and admin time.

  • Training/Support: Limited—often expected to be “plug-and-play.”

  • Work Pattern: Heavily event/season driven; feast-or-famine risk.

Employee (Not Staff)

W-2 Independent Adjuster

  • Pay Model: Hourly (often with OT eligibility) or salary-like weekly structure.

  • Taxes: Standard withholdings handled via payroll—no quarterly self-employment tax.

  • Support: Company systems, training pathways, QA feedback, and team leads.

  • Stability: More consistent schedules and earnings; easier ramp for new adjusters.
